This work took a multi-generational approach to cultivating the high desert in Taos. I created a series of watercolors that follows my father and son as they cultivate the permaculture gardens surrounding the Distillery in Taos through an entire season. Together, we are exploring the importance of sustainable agriculture in a way which encourages people to get their hands in the dirt of their own back yard. A very young Thatcher Gray helped build the textures in the works with stains from plants that came out of the garden like beets, red cabbage and tea, so that the textural foundation mimicked the rich textures of the garden itself. The paintings are paired with haiku written by my father, master gardener, Peter Leonard. Permaculture draws on ancient practices of responding to the landscape while being very forward looking. The approach shifts depending on locale, responding to specific climates and cultural norms. It brings traditional wisdom to the forefront and works in collaboration with the nature which sustains us. A sampling of the watercolors and haiku are included here:
