Native Plant Retreats
As part of our Art-Sci collaborations, we’ve partnered with the Colorado Native Plant Society (CoNPS) to offer retreats & residencies in the Land of Enchantment to support restoration of the Rocky Mountain Steppe
CoNPS is dedicated to furthering the knowledge, appreciation and conservation of native plants and habitats of Colorado through education, stewardship and advocacy.
We believe that creating ecological works of art using plants allows us the opportunity to get to know the plants on a new level. In collaboration with the National Forest Service, CoNPS volunteers are gathering native seeds from robust communities of native species targeted for wildfire restoration. While scoping out robust plant communities and later gathering seeds, we are creating cyanotypes of this collection of plants found to be essential in the first stages of forest succession. The plants are etched into paper and fabric by sunlight as we print them in the field at different phases of their lifecycle.

Located in the valley below historic Taos, NM, the TAOS Distillery is set under mature Cottonwood trees, surrounded by extensive gardens, with a view up the valley of the sacred Taos mountain. The original house was built during prohibition and brewed bootleg liquor for the speakeasy in town. We use the house now as a platform for the distillation and exchange of ideas centered on restorative practices in dry-land, Steppe ecologies.
Our home offers a quiet retreat in an area rich with history and arts. There is something very calming about staying in a house made of the earth. Adobe is a traditional style of architecture which suits the land here. We have added a new kitchen and master suite to the old house, maintaining the charm of houses from this area while providing a great room with updated amenities; designed to act as a space for family gatherings and shared tables between friends. There are grand spaces as well as cozy spaces. Warm fireplaces for winter and cool refuges for summer.
The house has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a library, office and drawing room as well as patios for al fresco dining. A roof top deck offers spectacular views and the opportunity to sleep out under the stars.
A 10 minute walk from the historic Taos plaza, we are conveniently located while maintaining the feel of a quiet retreat. The area is historically significant: The Taos Pueblo is a UNESCO site as the oldest continually inhabited structure in the country, and continues to engage the community with traditional dances and events. Before becoming a part of the United States, the area was settled by the Spanish and hosted a number of outlaws. In the early 20th century, Georgia O’Keefe and DH Lawrence helped to establish the area with the Taos Moderns as an art destination. The community continues to thrive with all of these historical influences.
Taos Mountain is renowned for outdoor enthusiasts and offers top notch skiing in the winter. The Rio Grande is well known in river running circles during spring run-off. Numerous trails offer outdoor opportunities in all seasons. There are interesting festivals and events throughout the calendar year, and the town of Taos is only an hour from one of the most creatively dense communities in the US, Santa Fe.
Visit taos.org for a full description of all this area has to offer.

The TAOS Distillery is an historic adobe which housed a bootleg operation during prohibition. The moonshine supplied the speakeasy run by Vincente Mares in the back of what is now La Fonda Hotel. Every day, he would ride his black stallion from his home here on La Lomita into town, he was an icon of the village a century ago. We purchased the old adobe and completed extensive renovations in 2012. We think of it now as a place for the distillation of ideas and a platform to help realize restorative acts as we share ways to cultivate the high desert steppe through a combination of ancient practices and emergent technologies. SEED to table, hugelCULTURE, Acequias, Sci/Art collaborations and native plant restoration are all themes that have been explored here. We host storytellers who define our relationship with western landscapes while following the tendrils of cultural influences that helped refine it. Storytellers from across disciplines are invited to apply for residencies or retreats to learn from the ancient ways of cultivating dry ecologies and share ideas on how to reverse desertification, promote restoration and amplify efforts that have demonstrated success.
