“In spite of our political circumstances and global dispersion, what ties all Palestinian tables together is more than just good food; it is the notion of ‘home’, the spirit of generosity, the importance of family, and the value of bringing people together.”
— Reem Kassis, from her book The Palestinian Table.

EVENTS
November 29, 1:00pm Habitat Library Book Talk – How to Winter
Featuring new books, and a preview of Winter/Spring Book Club plans.
“…that grand old poem called Winter.” — Henry David Thoreau
Just in time for the holidays, join us at Galleries on Downing as Habitat Library shares some of our favorite books from the past year. We’ll also provide everyone with a sneak peek at this Winter’s Habitat Book Clubs!
Dec 13th, 10:30a: the “Palestinian Walks” Book Club.
WHEN: Saturday, December 13th, 10:30am to 12 noon.
“For decades Raja has found comfort in walking, following what in Arab culture is called sarha – meaning to roam freely, at will, without restraint: to go where the spirit takes you.” — The Orwell Foundation.
When Raja Shehadeh first started hill walking in Palestine in the 1970’s he was not aware that he was traveling through a vanishing landscape. His book Palestinian Walks spans a period of twenty-seven years in the hills around Ramallah and through the ravines by the Dead Sea. The Guardian praised his lyrical nature writing, in the midst of the West Bank’s political realities.
“Towards any proper understanding of history there are many small paths. This constantly surprising book modestly describes walking along certain paths which have touched the lived lives of two millennia. I strongly suggest you walk with him.” — John Berger
December 20th, 10a to 4p Strong Coffee & Knafeh — a laid back return to Palestinian food traditions, hopefully with an undercurrent of hope and gratitude as we head toward the year’s end. Throughout the day (as supplies last) we’ll have refreshments inspired by the food traditions of Palestine, including knafeh — the dessert described in Yasmin Khan’s Zaitoun as “the glorious love child of baklava and cheesecake.“
“Palestinians don’t traditionally eat a dessert to end meals. Instead, sweets are enjoyed throughout the day with cups of tea and coffee.” — Yasmin Khan.
