STILES Mothers Day: Madam CJ Walker
The Stiles African American Heritage Center hosted a Saturday Afternoon Tea Plant Exchange to honor Madam CJ Walker. Volunteers planted native plants in the garden, focusing on community collaboration without a strict plan. They aim to promote biodiversity and support pollinators, sharing plants and seeds with neighbors to enhance local ecosystems.

STILES – Celebrating Mothers: Madam CJ Walker
The Stiles African American Heritage Center will host a Plant Exchange and Mother’s Day card-making event on May 13th from 2-4pm. Attendees can exchange plants significant to them, while honoring Madam CJ Walker’s legacy. Art materials will be provided to create cards celebrating mothers, supported by the Puffin Foundation.

STILES – Breaking Ground in the Hell-strip
Join us for an open house at the Stiles Center to learn about Aunt Clara Brown and our no-water, stone crevice gardens in the ‘hell-strip.’ Through themed Saturday Afternoon Teas, explore plant knowledge and community insights. Acequia: Printmaking at Green Olive Arts
In Summer 2022, during a project in Tetouan, Morocco, we explored Acequias’ living history while collecting local plants. We created prints using a plexiglass press method, incorporating an anthotype process with turmeric. This allowed for dual-color impressions while ensuring plant material was moist to prevent damage during printing.

Haïti: Lakou Basile
After visiting SAKALA, trees were planted in the Port-au-Prince woodworker community, utilizing compost from SOIL to enhance soil quality. Elder wood sculptor Basile Wesner helps steward these young trees, while wood shavings from local artisans serve as mulch. A young mango and moringa tree were planted as gratitude for their contributions.
